The Lingoda Level Placement Test
Like with anything new, we have to start somewhere. In language learning it’s the same. We all start at A1 and work our way up to the shining lights of C2. For some it can be a slow process, for others, quicker.
This is a question, as language learners, we often ask ourselves. But how do you know where to start when learning a language, if you don’t know what level you are? Perhaps you’ve been using some apps, or have taken classes here and there but never really committed. You might actually be better than you think you are!
And what about the CEFR, we hear you say? Well, all of Lingoda’s learning materials are designed with the CEFR in mind.
Not sure what it is? Well, as the Council of Europe say “The CEFR organises language proficiency in six levels, A1 to C2, which can be regrouped into three broad levels: Basic User, Independent User and Proficient User.” You can find further details on the CEFR self-assessment grid (if that’s your sort of thing) here.
Knowing your learning level is important for many reasons. It’s always best to start at the right level, that way you won’t feel too discouraged, or out of your depth.
You need to know what your strengths and weakness are, so that you can improve them, or focus your revision on specific aspects of the language, such as past tenses, or idioms.
Perhaps you’d like to get to B2 French by the end of the year. By knowing what level you are currently at, you can plan your time accordingly to ensure you reach your target, and take the required amount of classes. Not only is knowing your level important for you, but it’s also important for our teachers and your classmates. If you enter a class and you’re really B2 but you think you’re A2.2, you’re going to feel frustrated. It’s going to be too easy, and you’re going to wonder what’s wrong.
