So, you’ve signed up to Lingoda to boost your language skills – that was a smart decision. You have everything you need at your fingertips: high-quality materials, expert teachers and a variety of scheduling options. But, as with all things in life, you’ll only get out of this what you put into it.
To make sure you have the best chance of success at learning your target language, there are a few things you can do inside and outside of class time.
Before you can figure out where you’re going, you need to know where you are. That’s why the first thing you should do on your language journey is to take Lingoda’s free placement test. Once you take the test and know your CEFR score (from A1 to C2), you’ll be able to pick your classes confidently. You won’t have to worry about joining a class that’s too far above or below your level.
Take the placement test in French, German, Spanish or English to start off on the right foot!
As we mentioned above, knowing what skills you have will help you select the appropriate classes for your skill level. If you choose lessons that are too easy, you may breeze through every class (and feel pretty good about yourself) but you won’t improve. On the other hand, taking classes that are too challenging will cause you to lose interest and motivation.
It’s also a good idea to sign up for topics you’re interested in or those that will be useful to you. If you’re not sure what those are, start by signing up for a variety of classes. That’ll help you narrow down what you really want to focus on.
5 positives of learning a language as part of a team
Lingoda offers modern, relevant, expertly created course materials, so make sure you use them!
You can get a headstart on every class by downloading and reading the materials ahead of time. Checking out materials before a class will help you get familiar with the topic and look up new vocabulary so you can stay on track during class time. It will also help you identify any parts of the lesson you find extra challenging so you’ll be prepared to ask questions when needed.
If you’re already familiar with Lingoda’s methods, you know that we are huge fans of speaking from day one! While our lessons all focus on a variety of skills, speaking is the glue that holds them all together. Through speaking practise, you’ll improve your pronunciation, figure out how grammar is used in real, natural speech (not just course materials) and learn slang and idioms.
On top of that, speaking is a great way to improve your confidence, allowing you to participate in classes more by speaking up and asking questions.
For these reasons and more, it’s essential that you practise speaking as much as possible outside of class time.
Learn a new language with the Lingoda Language Challenge
When you’re learning a language, you need to stay on top of your practise. Ensure you take classes regularly so you can keep your momentum and build on what you’ve already learned. This will help you make regular progress more easily. And, of course, when you see yourself improving, you’ll be motivated to continue!
You’ll also remember more if you review material consistently. Regularly reviewing topics you’ve already learned will tell your brain that it’s important information – and should be moved from short-term to long-term memory.
Your Lingoda teachers are language experts and they make all the difference. Take advantage of their knowledge during every class! When you don’t understand something or you’d like to know more, ask questions – that’s what your teacher is there for. And when they correct you or provide feedback, make sure you really listen to what they’re telling you. Knowing your mistakes so you can avoid them is a natural and important part of learning.
Another way to stay involved is to take notes. Writing down key points during lessons will keep your mind focused on new information and help you understand better. These notes will also come in handy when you’re reviewing the class material later.
Want to learn a language? Don’t forget culture and context!
Signing up with Lingoda is a fantastic step on your path to language learning. To get serious about your success, make sure you try the tips above!
