What is a Spanish B1 course?

A B1 Spanish course is a structured learning program, which teaches intermediate-level Spanish. It’s based on the guidelines established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which is an internationally recognized standard for breaking down language learning, based on a person’s abilities.

B1 Spanish marks the point at which a learner develops the basic language skills required for living, studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country. Once you obtain your B1 level Spanish certificate, you’ll be able to deal with most of the common situations you’ll encounter while traveling and describe situations, events and your goals.

You can take a B1 Spanish course with Lingoda if you’ve previously obtained an A2 level certificate, or if your language abilities are at an equivalent level. If you’re unsure of your current language level, our  placement test can help.

Is Spanish B1 difficult?

Spanish is generally considered one of the easier languages for English speakers to acquire, although the B1 level is an intermediate-level course, which requires an existing knowledge of frequently used expressions and common phrases. B1 level Spanish is the third level of language acquisition, following on from Spanish A1 level and Spanish A2 courses.

For most people, difficulty is not a major obstacle to learning Spanish. However, to reach B1 level, you’ll need to be committed to learning and willing to invest the necessary amount of time and effort.

Lingoda aims to make learning easier by providing a supportive learning environment, qualified and experienced teachers who can speak native-level Spanish, and additional resources you can use for independent study.

Can I learn Spanish B1 by myself?

We strongly believe the best way to learn Spanish is through structured lessons, which are taught by a native-level teacher, such as those teaching on Lingoda’s B1 Spanish course online. This provides the kind of environment where you can practice using Spanish with other people, have your mistakes corrected and build your confidence.

You can certainly use independent study time to enhance your learning, reinforce what you’ve picked up from classes and expand your vocabulary. We encourage our students to try to immerse themselves in the language too.

There are many ways you can achieve this. For instance, you might want to visit a Spanish-speaking country, or read books written in the Spanish language — starting with children’s books and gradually working your way up. You can also take some time to listen to Spanish music,  watch Spanish films on Netflix, or visit Spanish news websites.

What do you learn in a Spanish B1 online course?

A B1 Spanish course is designed to prepare you for handling everyday conversations and the most common situations you may encounter. More specifically, when you study B1 Spanish with Lingoda, you’ll learn:

  • How to apply for a job in Spanish and succeed in a job interview.
  • How to talk about topics like moving to a new city and finding a house or apartment.
  • How to use vocabulary related to the internet, including language around social media and online shopping.
  • How to discuss traditions, cultural differences and ideas like identity and nationality.

By taking our B1 Spanish course online, you’ll continue to develop your speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.

How long does a Spanish B1 course take?

Starting from a place of zero knowledge, the estimated time needed to pass Spanish B1 and earn your certificate is around 300 to 360 hours. If you’re starting from Spanish A2 level and focusing solely on reaching Spanish B1 level, you can expect to spend around 150 to 200 hours studying as part of a B1 level course.

It’s important to stress that these are broad estimates and many different factors can influence how long it takes you to learn Spanish. For instance, it may depend on the other languages you speak and how compatible they are with Spanish. It’ll also depend on your own motivation and the amount of effort you’re able to put in.

To give yourself the best possible chance, you should focus on structured lessons taught by qualified teachers, as this provides a logical progression route. This is why our B1 level Spanish course is so popular.

How much does a Spanish B1 course cost?
